The Health Ministry Approves a Groundbreaking Plan to Increase Regional Medical Product Manufacturing

Posted on : Monday , 10th November 2025

With the approval of the Health Products and Technologies Local Manufacturing Strategy 2026–2030, the Ministry of Health has made significant progress in bolstering Kenya's health security and lowering dependency on imported medical goods.

The strategy, which was presented at a stakeholder validation conference at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi under the direction of Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, lays out an innovative approach to increase domestic production of medications, vaccines and medical technologies.

According to Dr. Oluga, the strategy will turn Kenya into a hub for regional manufacturing and guarantee that vital medical supplies are available even in times of global disruption, like pandemics.

"Local manufacturing is not just about making medications; it's about strengthening our health system and making sure that every Kenyan has access to reasonably priced, high-quality healthcare products made right here at home," he said.

The plan, which is based on Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), recognizes local production as a catalyst for economic expansion, job creation and innovation. Additionally, it backs President William Ruto's mandate that at least 50% of necessary medical supplies be produced domestically.

There are currently more than 40 pharmaceutical manufacturers in Kenya. The new framework aims to boost competitiveness in local and international markets, diversify output and increase capacity.

In order to unlock investment and fortify regulatory frameworks, Dr. Oluga urged greater cooperation between government agencies, manufacturers and development partners. He pointed out that attaining international standards will require research, innovation and quality assurance.

Senior government representatives, such as Principal Secretaries Ms. Mary Muthoni (Public Health and Professional Standards) and Ms. Regina Ombum (Trade), were present at the forum together with manufacturers, development partners and other important industry participants.

The Health Products and Technologies Local Manufacturing Strategy 2026–2030, once finalized, would direct Kenya's path toward health commodity self-reliance, guaranteeing universal access to sustainable, reasonably priced and equitable healthcare.
