Gulu Hospital to get cancer institute

Posted on : Friday , 23rd October 2015

The fully fledged institute will be located on the land where the Central Police Station is currently situated.

Dr. Nathan Onyach the Gulu Regional Referral Hospital Director told Radio Rupiny that by early next year the police station will have been relocated near Gulu Main Prison to pave way for the cancer institute’s construction.

Francis Okongo the cancer registrar at St. Mary’s Lacor Hospital says in 2013-14, 767 cases that included adults and children were reported in from Gulu, Nwoya and Amuru districts.

Okongo says over 50% of the cases reported were of women battling cervical cancer.

“Cervical cancer used to be a problem for the elderly from 40 years and above. The age at which women get cancer has gone down from 40 to 15 years because of HIV” he said.

However, none of the hospital facilities provides treatment for advanced cancer cases that affect adults apart from the children who are of ages 1-14.
